TL;DR — Quick Summary
CONTPAQi installation and activation errors: fix .NET dependencies, SQL Server, hardware ID mismatches, license server, port conflicts, and database migration.
CONTPAQi Installation and Activation Errors
CONTPAQi products (Comercial, Contabilidad, Nóminas, Bancos) are Mexico’s most widely used business management systems. However, their installation involves multiple interdependent components — SQL Server, the License Server, .NET Framework, and Visual C++ Redistributable — that can block access to the system when they fail.
This article covers the most frequent errors during initial installation, version upgrades, and license activation, with their root causes and step-by-step solutions.
The Error
The most common error messages you will see during CONTPAQi installation or activation:
- “Error activating the system license” — appears when opening CONTPAQi after a Windows update or hardware change.
- “License server not found” — in network installations when the License Server is not running or unreachable.
- “The installer requires .NET Framework 4.5 or higher” — when system dependencies are missing.
- The installer hangs at “Configuring components…” without progressing.
- “Database migration error” — during upgrades from a previous version.
- “Activation code already used” or “Activation code has expired”.
- The CONTPAQi License Server service fails to start in Windows Services.
Cause of the Problem
Each error has a specific cause:
- Changed hardware ID: Windows 10/11 feature updates can change the hardware identifier CONTPAQi uses to validate the license, leaving the activation code bound to the previous hardware.
- Missing or conflicting dependencies: CONTPAQi requires specific versions of Visual C++ Redistributable (2010, 2012, 2015-2022) and .NET Framework 4.8. If any version is corrupted or missing, the installer fails silently or freezes.
- Misconfigured SQL Server: The
CONTPAQSQLinstance does not exist, the service is stopped, or network protocols (TCP/IP, Named Pipes) are disabled. - Ports blocked by firewall or antivirus: The License Server uses TCP port 5555, SQL Server uses TCP 1433 and UDP 1434 (SQL Browser). If the firewall blocks them, network clients cannot connect.
- Wrong installation order: Installing the product before the License Server or SQL Server creates configuration errors.
- Database migration failure: When upgrading between major CONTPAQi versions, the migration process can fail if the database has inconsistencies or the SQL Server version is incompatible.
Step-by-Step Solution
Step 1: Verify prerequisites
Before installing, confirm the machine meets these requirements:
| Component | Minimum Requirement |
|---|---|
| Operating System | Windows 10/11 (64-bit) |
| RAM | 8 GB (16 GB recommended for multi-product) |
| SQL Server | Express 2014 or higher (included in CONTPAQi installer) |
| .NET Framework | 4.8 (download from microsoft.com if missing) |
| Visual C++ | 2010, 2012, 2015-2022 Redistributable (x86 and x64) |
To check installed components, open Control Panel → Programs and Features and search for “Microsoft Visual C++”. Download any missing versions from the Microsoft Update Catalog.
Step 2: Fix the installer freezing at “Configuring components”
If the installer freezes at this point:
- Cancel the installation and restart the machine.
- Go to Control Panel → Programs and Features.
- Uninstall all “Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable” packages (all versions and architectures).
- Restart again.
- Run the CONTPAQi installer as administrator with antivirus disabled.
The CONTPAQi installer includes its own redistributable versions and will reinstall them cleanly.
Step 3: Configure SQL Server for CONTPAQi
- Open SQL Server Configuration Manager (search “Sql Server” in the Start menu).
- Under SQL Server Services, verify SQL Server (CONTPAQSQL) is Running with Automatic startup.
- Under SQL Server Network Configuration → Protocols for CONTPAQSQL, enable TCP/IP and Named Pipes.
- In TCP/IP properties, go to the IP Addresses tab, scroll to IPAll, and set TCP Port to
1433(clear any dynamic port value). - Restart the SQL Server service.
- In Windows Firewall, create inbound exceptions for:
- TCP port 1433 (SQL Server)
- UDP port 1434 (SQL Browser)
Step 4: Fix “Error activating the system license”
This error appears when the machine’s hardware ID changed (after a Windows update, motherboard replacement, etc.):
- Open CONTPAQi and go to Help → Activate License.
- Enter your serial number and activation code.
- Choose “Internet activation” — if the code was previously used on the same machine, the system will recognize it and reactivate automatically.
- If you receive “Code already used” or “Hardware mismatch”, choose “Phone activation”.
- Call 800 CON TPAQ (800 266 8727) during business hours. Provide your serial number and the installation code shown on screen. The agent will give you a new activation code.
Step 5: Fix “License server not found”
In multi-user network installations:
- On the server, open
services.mscand verify CONTPAQi License Server is running. If not, start it and set startup to Automatic. - Add a Windows Firewall exception on the server for TCP port 5555 (inbound and outbound).
- From a client machine, ping the server by name and IP to confirm connectivity.
- On the client, open CONTPAQi and go to Tools → Configure License Server. Enter the correct server IP or hostname.
Step 6: Fix database migration errors when upgrading
If the database migration fails during a CONTPAQi version upgrade:
- Before upgrading, create a full backup of all companies from Utilities → Backup.
- If the migration already failed, do not force a second run. Restore the backup to a test copy.
- Verify that SQL Server is at a version compatible with the new CONTPAQi version (check the release notes).
- Run the migrator from the installation folder as administrator:
C:\Program Files\Computación en Acción\CONTPAQi\Migrador.exe - If the error references specific tables, contact CONTPAQi technical support with the error log at
C:\ProgramData\Compac\Logs\.
Alternative Solution
If both internet and phone activation fail, you can generate an offline activation request file:
- On the activation screen, choose “File activation”.
- Save the generated
.reqfile to a USB drive. - From another computer with internet access, go to CONTPAQi’s activation portal:
activacion.contpaqi.com. - Upload the
.reqfile and download the.licresponse file. - On the offline machine, load the
.licfile in the activation screen.
Prevention
- Always document your serial number and activation code in a safe location — not just in the distributor email.
- Deactivate the license before formatting or changing hardware: Help → Deactivate License. This frees the hardware ID and allows reactivation without calling support.
- Configure SQL Server with static port 1433 during the initial installation to avoid conflicts when SQL Server updates change dynamic ports.
- Create a full backup before every version upgrade to protect against migration failures.
- Use a Windows account with local administrator privileges both to install and activate CONTPAQi, especially on domain-joined machines.
- Add antivirus exclusions for
C:\Program Files\Computación en Acción\andC:\ProgramData\Compac\from day one.
Related Issues
- Port conflict with Aspel: If you have both Aspel and CONTPAQi on the same server, their license servers may conflict. Aspel uses port 3050 for Firebird. Verify each uses a distinct port.
- CONTPAQi won’t open after a Windows update: May be a conflict with Windows’s new .NET runtime. Reinstall .NET Framework 4.8 from Microsoft’s website and restart.
- CONTPAQSQL SQL Server instance disappears: Happens when Windows Update installs a SQL Server version that overwrites the named instance. Reinstall SQL Server Express manually with the instance name
CONTPAQSQL. - Activation code expired: Activation codes are valid for 30 days from the purchase date. Contact your distributor to generate a new one from the CONTPAQi partner portal.
Summary
- Always verify prerequisites (SQL Server, .NET 4.8, Visual C++) before installing.
- Install in the correct order: License Server → SQL Server → CONTPAQi product.
- Hardware ID activation errors are resolved by phone at 800 266 8727.
- The License Server must run as a Windows service with TCP port 5555 open in the firewall.
- Configure SQL Server with static port 1433 and enable TCP/IP from SQL Server Configuration Manager.
- Always back up before upgrading to protect against database migration failures.
